Confronting Overproduction & Shelter Overcrowding
U.S. animal shelters are at a breaking point. Rampant overproduction, low availability of spay/neuter services, and human economic instability have come together in a perfect storm of need and shelter overcrowding.
This video makes the argument that animal welfare is human welfare. As a result, even at a time where there are substantial human issues that state & local governments need to confront, animal welfare reforms should be a priority.
Because the central part of the problems we currently see are the result of rampant overproduction in the wake of COVID-19, targeted spay/neuter with an eye towards expanding the veterinary pie—creatively finding existing surgery spaces and time that can be used to timely provide surgeries—is imperative to resolving the current animal welfare crisis.
Building Resources for a More Humane Community
Many offenses against animals stem from one or more of several sources: poverty, ignorance, indifference, and malice. While all can result in harm, the approach to preventing future harm differs based on the underlying cause.
This video presents research into and models of community programs that effectively and humanely prevent neglect while also building a relationship between animal services departments and the most vulnerable people and pets in their communities.
