Students in the University of Georgia School of Law’s Practicum in Animal Welfare (PAWS) work with jurisdictions around the State of Georgia to improve animal welfare through a combination of programs, practices, and ordinances.

Host Team-Building Workshops
PAWS hosts workshops, bringing together professionals involved in animal welfare to build relationships and share knowledge. These workshops are held in the applicable jurisdiction and provide POST and CLE credit at no cost to the participants.

Hold Pop-Up Veterinary Clinics
PAWS holds pop-up veterinary care clinics in underserved communities in the Athens area each semester. These clinics provide access to care otherwise often absent in these communities together with information about the laws and best practices governing the care of pet dogs and cats. For these clinics, we partner with veterinary professionals, students from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, and Athens-Clarke County Animal Services.
For an explanation and example of these clinics, watch Beyond Sheltering: Building Resources for a More Humane Community. Participation in these clinics is by invitation only.

Accelerate Spay/Neuter Efficiency and Impact
Working with United Spay Alliance, nonprofit organizations, and local governments throughout Georgia, we help plan advanced spay/neuter trainings for existing veterinarians and spayathons targeted at the animals most apt to be adding to pet overproduction and shelter overcrowding. For more information, watch Beyond Sheltering: Confronting Overproduction & Shelter Overcrowding.

Teach a Monthly Animal Welfare Class
Each month, students in PAWS teach an animal welfare class covering the state and local laws concerning animal welfare and best practices for caring for cats and dogs. This program is currently only available in Athens-Clarke County, but a remotely-available asynchronous version of the class is currently in preparation.

Produce Educational Videos
PAWS has produced the Beyond Sheltering series of educational videos, which cover research and practices that improve animal welfare, the enforcement of animal laws, and programs that reduce pet overproduction and shelter overcrowding.
